Everyone has already heard about the Grand Canyon at least once in his life. We already visited the South Rim in December 2010 but this time we went to the North Rim. And we didn’t stay at the top of the Rim. We went down into the bowels of the canyon to see what is hidden in it. We packed our backpacks for 3 days of hiking and get ready to discover this mythical landscape.
We began the descent of 14.2 miles and we quickly understood that coming back up would not be very easy. The first 3 miles are very steep until we reached Roaring Springs Valley. We then followed the Roaring Springs to the bottom. The path begins to level off, walls narrow. From that moment, we were very far from any civilization. We were only passing hikers looking for the same thing as us: the beauty of the place. We stopped to camp half-way from the bottom along Roaring Springs.
La voie lactée, toujours aussi belle.
Don’t you think that the Milky Way is amazing?
The next day, we left our camp set-up and hiked down to reach the Colorado River at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. It’s so much easier to hike only armed with our cameras and snacks. As the day before, we followed the Roaring Springs, nestled between the gigantic walls of the Canyon until we reached the Colorado River after 3 hours and half of walk.

We stayed not less than 4 hours at the bottom of the Canyon, taking pictures, recharging our batteries and bathing in the river before starting again the ascent to our campsite 7.5 miles away. This part of the trail is mostly flat, which allowed us to keep up a decent rhythm without spending all our energies. We needed to save energy for the last day.
The last day was another story. The first miles are going up slowly but the last and final ascent to reach the Rim is an ordeal, a fight against fatigue and the steep slope. We took our time and we did several stops to avoid arriving at the top completely worn out. We came across tourists riding down on mules and some volunteers working on maintaining the trail and getting it prepare for the winter. It was a victory against the Canyon when we arrived at our starting point left 2 days ago. We can only highly recommend to everyone who gets the chance to go there to backpack in the Grand Canyon. You would be able to enjoy the peace and the quietness of this gorgeous place.
Un kingsnake, espèce non venimeuse. Magnifique, non?
A beautiful kingsnake. It’s a non venomous snake.
